A rookie left-hander kept Vancouver's season alive for at least one
more game.
Andrew Heaney tossed a five-hit shutout in Game 3, defeating
San Francisco at home as the Iron First put up 4 runs in the 7th for a 4-0 win.
San Francisco leads the first round Best of 5 series, 2 games to 1, with Game 3 scheduled Monday at Vancouver.
It was basically a pitcher's duel for the most part until the 7th inning. The only scoring opportunity prior to that came in the 3rd for San Francisco. Danny Espinosa drew a leadoff walk, Heaney's only one, then stole second with two outs before Alex Gordon singled to center, only to see Espinosa gunned down at the plate by J.D. Martinez from right field.
Gordon basically had the only offense for San Francisco, going 3-for-3, all singles.
Jonathan Schoop got the Vancouver rally going in the 7th, reaching on an error by shortstop Marcus Semien, followed by a single from Prince Fielder. Martinez came to the plate and cracked a homer, chasing starter Mike Fiers.
Keone Kela kame on and retired two before walking Anthony Rendon and then hitting Charlie Blackmon. David Peralta snuck a grounder to left, scoring Rendon from second, but got nailed at 2nd on a throw by Marlon Byrd to end the inning.
Up 4-0, that was all the runs Heaney would need, sending San Francisco down in order the next two innings. He struck out 3 and walked 1, scattering 5 hits. Fiers went 6 innings, taking the loss despite just 4 hits allowed and 3 runs, 2 earned. He struck out 5 and walked 1.
For Game 4, the Iron First will call on Felix Hernandez to continue their season while The Experience will turn to Scott Kazmir to try to close out the series in four games.
