Dallas Keuchel became the first pitcher to reach 20 wins this season, and the first pitcher to win 20 games since fellow left-hander Clayton Kershaw and San Francisco's Anibal Sanchez both went 20-7 in 2014, along with Durham's Sonny Gray who sported a 23-6 mark that year.
The left-handed Keuchel (pronounced Kike-Ill, more or less) finishes the season at 20-5 after a 6-inning effort, striking out 8, with 2 walks. Keuchel yielded 7 hits and 3 unearned runs, keeping the Golden Falcons' hope alive to tie Tucson for the No. 1 seed (what happens in tiebreakers for the No. 1 is anyone's guess...).
The 5th inning was Keuchel's only blemish. Danny Espinosa got it going with a one-out single, and Chris Iannetta singled after a passed ball to score Espinosa before Alex Gordon singled. Arkansas first baseman Anthony Rizzo mishandled Jed Lowrie's routine ground ball to get him on base. Brandon Belt's single scored two unearned runs before Keuchel got Marcus Semien to ground out and the worst was over. Keuchel gave up two 6th-inning singles and walked Iannetta to load the bases before retiring Gordon.
Sam Dyson worked two innings before Zach Britton came on for the 9th inning to earn his 24th save.
With two games remaining in the season, two other pitchers have a shot at 20 wins before the season. David Price will try to start Saturday night for Allentown and Adam Warren is scheduled to start for San Francisco in Sunday's season finale.
Meanwhile, Hillsborough's playoff chances were essentially cut in half. The Hit Men's only chance now is via the Drabek Division title, and even that is slim. With 2 games to go, Hillsborough's only hope rests with winning the final two games and hoping for Arkansas to continue their winning ways (which would be a a seven-game winning streak) and knock off San Francisco in two games to finish in a tie for the Drabek Division.
The Wild Card is not an option for the Hit Men; that will be either Vancouver or Hopatcong. After Vancouver knocked off Hillsborough and Hopatcong beat Hoboken, both the Floating Fish and Iron First are still tied for the No. 6 seed (87-73).
San Francisco's loss, coupled with Sardine City's win, puts the Straphangers into the No. 3 seed, for the moment, one game ahead of the Experience.
