2016 pitching leaders

Clayton Kershaw made his final start of the season against Hopatcong on Saturday, needing 12 strikeouts to reach 300 for the second year in a row. He got 11.
The veteran left-hander would have been the first pitcher to reach 300 strikeouts in consecutive seasons after 308 punchouts in 2015. He'll have to settle for being the closest to achieve that distinction.

Randy Johnson had 271 strikeouts in 1994 and 349 in 1996 (the strike hit DMBL in 1995). In 2000, he had 293 strikeouts and followed it up with 308 in 2001 for Newark. Meanwhile, Pedro Martinez did it the other way around for Arkansas, striking out 347 in 2000 but falling short of 300 in 2001, with 293.

Kershaw will have to console himself with being the league leader in strikeouts for the second consecutive year. Here's a quick look at the final statistical league pitching leaders for the 2016 season, followed by the runner-up(s):
