Kershaw shuts down Tucson

Clayton Kershaw limited Tucson to 2 hits over 7 innings and the bullpen held on for 4-1 win at Hoboken in Game 3, to take a 2-1 lead in the Best-of-7 semifinal series.

Jose Reyes smacked 2 doubles and scored twice while Wilmer Flores homered and drove in two against Madison Bumgarner.

Flores plated Reyes in the 3rd before getting nailed trying to stretch his single to right field into a double. Tucson's run came in the top of the 4th thanks to an error. Nelson Cruz reached second base on Flores' flub then took 3rd on a groundout before scoring on a single by David Ross.

Flores made up for his error with a solo homer run in bottom of the 6th to give Hoboken a 2-1 lead.

The Cutters added two needed insurance runs in the 8th. After Matt Joyce struck out to open the inning, Jarrod Dyson and Reyes smacked back-to-back doubles for a 3-1 lead. Adrian Beltre struck out before Wilmer Flores walked. Miguel Cabrera then came through with a double to right center, scoring Reyes and putting two runners in scoring position.

With David Ortiz due up, Bumgarner got the hook after 121 pitches in favor of Kyle Barraclough, who gave Ortiz an intentional pass before striking out Rene Rivera for the third out.

Tyler Thornburg walked the first two batters -- Cruz and Marcell Ozuna -- to start the 9th inning with the tying run at the plate and nobody out. Sean Rodriguez, pinch-hitting for Ross, flied to center, allowing Cruz to move to 3rd base. With runners on the corners, the tying run again came to the plate in the form of Chris Davis, pinch-hitting for David Freese. The home crowd let out a sigh of relief when the lefty slugger grounded into a 6-4-3 double play to end the game.

Kershaw (3-0) finished with 8 strikeouts and 1 walk over 7 innings, allowing just 2 hits and an unearned run. Nate Jones tossed a scoreless 8th before Thornburg earned his second save of the postseason.

Bumgarner scattered 8 hits over 7 2/3 innings, allowing 4 runs. The lefty struck out 7 and walked two but took the loss.
