Cruz clubs two homers for Tucson

Reigning postseason MVP Nelson Cruz went 4-for-4 with two home runs to help Tucson beat Hoboken, 5-3, evening their semifinal series with Hoboken at 2-2.

Jon Lester overcame 4 walks in 5 1/3 innings, scattering 3 hits and 3 runs (2 earned), with 4 strikeouts.

Both teams put up 3 runs in the 2nd inning. Cruz led off with a home run. After two strikeouts, Max Scherzer walked Kole Calhoun, then Zack Cozart singled before Kevin Kiermaier drove them home with a single. J.T. Realmuto struck out to end the inning.

Wilmer Flores started the Cutters rally by reaching on an error by Jose Altuve to open the bottom of the second. David Ortiz singled before Miguel Cabrera walked to load the bases. Matt Joyce struck out and after a wild pitch scored Flores, Rene Rivera belted a double to drive in two more runs.

Cruz smacked another solo homer in the 3rd to put the second-seeded Kingsnakes up 4-3.

No. 3 Hoboken threatened in the bottom of the inning. Jose Reyes walked to lead off the inning. Adrian Beltre grounded out before Flores popped out to first and then David Ortiz doubled to put two in scoring position. Lester walked Cabrera to load the bases for Joyce who grounded out to end the threat.

A one-out walk to Cabrera, his third of the game, was Lester's final batter. Ryan Buchter came on and promptly got Joyce to bounce back to the mound into a double play.

The Cutters stranded a man on 3rd to end the 8th. Wilmer Flores slapped a one-out double and took third on a groundout but Cabrera struck out to end the inning, still trailing 5-3.

Nate Jones started the 8th inning yielding back-to-back singles to Altuve and Cruz. A Sean Rodriguez fly ball to center advanced runners to 2nd and 3rd and a sac fly from Nolan Arenado brought home Altuve to an insurance run, making it 5-3.

Scherzer (0-2) was tagged for the loss despite 11 strikeouts in 7 innings. He surrendered 4 runs on 6 hits and walked two. Jones finished the final two innings, allowing a run on two hits.

Seung Hwan Oh earned the save, with a walk and two strikeouts in the 9th.
