Nola Ks 11, Iron Fist pound Verlander

Aaron Nola struck out 11 in his first postseason start while Vancouver pummeled Justin Verlander in 2+ innings to take Game 1 of their first round series, 8-3, at the IronDome.

Hillsborough opened the 2nd inning with homers from Eddie Rosario and Miguel Sano for a quick 2-0 lead, followed by a Matt Davidson double before Nola settled down.

Nola (1-0) went 8 innings, yielding 3 runs on 7 hit to get the win; 86 of his 113 pitches went for strikes (.761). Juan Nicasio closed out the game with a scoreless 9th. Alex Avila finished with a game-high 5 RBI, a three-run blast in the 2nd and a two-run single in the 3rd, innings when Vancouver scored all 8 of its runs.

The Iron First took advantage of an error by Kris Bryant with one out in the 2nd to get Jonathan Schoop on base, followed by a single from Anthony Rendon. Both advanced on a ground out before Avila lofted a homer to left center, giving Vancouver a 3-2 lead.

Verlander yielded back-to-back doubles to J.D. Martinez and Charlie Blackmon to begin the 3rd before recording an out, making it 4-2, then three straight singles by Carlos Santana, Schoop and Rendon ended his night. Joakim Soria came on with the bases juiced -- all Verlander's responsibility -- and No. 9 hitter Jean Segura greeted him with a run-scoring single before Avila drove in two runs with another single to make it 8-2.

The Hit Men scratched out a run in 5th. Mookie Betts singled and stole 2nd to start the inning, advanced on a ground out and scored on a Kris Bryant fly ball to right.

Verlander, who was acquired at the deadline from Livingston, lasted just 2 1/3 innings, banged up for 8 runs, 5 earned, on 8 hits. He struck out 5 and walked 1. Soria managed 1 2/3 scoreless innings despite his 2 hits allowing Verlander's final runs to score. Erasmo Ramirez tried to keep the Hit Men in the game, allowing just 2 hits over the final 4 innings, walking 1 and striking out 2.

The Iron Fist pounded out 12 hits, with everyone joining in but Matt Kemp, leaving 9 men on base. Hillsborough collected 7 hits and 3 runs, leaving 6 on base.

Game 2 will be Sunday night in Vancouver.
