Bumgarner quiets Mighty Men for Game 3 win

Justin Turner hit another leadoff homer run - his 3rd straight game with a long ball - but Madison Bumgarner settled in after that to tame Marietta's offense as Tucson beat the Mighty Men 8-3 in Game 3 on Monday.
The win gives the 4th-seeded King Snakes a 2-1 lead in their Best-of-Five first round series with 5th-seeded Marietta. Tucson can close out the series with a win at Marietta in Game 4 on Tuesday.

Tucson got on the board first. Jose Altuve stole second after getting hit by a pitch and scored on Marcell Ozuna's triple. Ozuna came home on Mike Zunino's ground out to short and Tucson had a quick 2-0 lead.

Justin Turner continued his hot hitting, homering for the 3rd straight game, including his second homer to leadoff a game, cutting the lead to 2-1. Bumgarner was in control after that, allowing just 1 other hit - a meaningless 3rd inning single by Starlin Castro - until the 8th inning.

The King Snakes broke opened the game in the 4th inning, chasing Charlie Morton. Tucson drubbed the Marietta starter with six consecutive hits to open the inning, alternating doubles and singles before the first out, a Brett Gardner sacrifice fly to left that made the score 7-1. Altuve doubled to put two more men in scoring position and Marietta finally went to the pen.

Dellin Betances walked the first batter he faced - Ozuna - to load the bases but came back to strikeout Zunino for the second out. But then he walked Avisail Garcia to force in a run, extending Tucson's lead to 8-1. Nolan Arenado struck out to finally end the inning. Four more relievers -- Anthony Swarzak, Tommy Kahnle, Pat Neshek and Chad Green -- limited the King Snakes to 2 hits the rest of the way to try to keep the Mighty Men in the game.

In the Marietta 8th, Chris Taylor led off the 8th with a single and took 3rd on a double by Jed Lowrie to start a Mighty Men rally. Castro brought home Taylor with a fly ball to center field to make it 8-2. Pinch-hitting for Kevin Kiermaier, Mitch Haniger grounded out to 3rd for the second out before Turner was plunked. But Bumgarner got Chris Iannetta to ground out to third to end any threat.

Luis Garcia took over for Bumgarner to start the 9th. Derek Dietrich delivered pinch-hit infield single with one out, which was followed by an Asdrubal Cabrera double. Taylor drove in Dietrich, dropping a single to shallow left to make it 8-3. Tucson was taking no chances, lifting Garcia after surrendering 3 hits and a run in just 1/3 inning, and turning to closer Craig Kimbrel. He struck out Lowrie, bringing up Ben Zobrist, pinch-hitting for Castro, who flied to right to end the game.

Morton (0-1) lasted just 3 1/3 innings, pounded for 8 runs on 9 hits, with 3 strikeouts. Bumgarner (1-0) scattered 4 hits and 2 runs over 8 innings, with 9 strikeouts.

Seven King Snakes had at least 1 RBI, led by Arenado who drove in two with a double in the big 4th inning, and 8 different batters scored a run. Altuve, Garcia, and Nelson Cruz each had 2 hits. Taylor led Marietta with 2 hits.

Tucson finished with 8 runs on 11 hits, leaving 6 men on base. Marietta struck for 3 runs on 7 hits, leaving 5 men aboard.

It's possible Max Scherzer gets the call on three days' rest, although he did toss 133 pitches over 6 innings in Game 1, or Tucson could turn to a lefty, Rich Hill, for the third straight game. Marietta likely will have either Jeff Samardzija or Andrew Cashner available or give Luis Severino, who threw 80 pitches in 4+ innings in a Game 1 start, a chance on short rest.
