Three-home run fever is catching

Three-homer fever has spread to Tuscon. Kingsnakes 3B Nolan Arenado launched a trio of home runs on Wednesday and Tucson was the victim of three home runs the very next night by Philly's Tommy Joseph.

Arenado teed off on Rick Porcello for three solo shots in Wednesday's 9-4 pummeling at Hoboken (Ebbetts Field). Porcello was tagged for six home runs in all, with a solo shot by Sean Rodriguez and two-run jacks by Jose Altuve and and J.T. Realmuto as well.

Porcello managed to get through 7 1/3 innings in just 76 pitches but yielded 9 earned runs on 9 hits thanks to Tucson's efficient offense. Arenado's 3rd HR in the 8th brought the hook for Porcello. Reliever Nate Jones hit the first batter he faced, Nelson Cruz, who was the only Kingsnake left on base the entire game.

Arenado finished 3-4 with 3 runs and 3 RBIs, his home runs coming in the 2nd, 4th and 8th innings.

Joseph became the fourth player within a week - and fifth on the season - to launch three homers in a game. Batting cleanup out of the DH spot at home (AT&T Park), Joseph homered in three straight at-bats: a 2-run blast in the 4th and a solo shot in 6th, both off starter Jon Lester, and another in the 8th off Pedro Strop. Joseph had a chance to tie a league record with his 4th home run but struck out in the 9th against Seung Hwan Oh, finishing the night 3-5 with 4 RBI and 3 runs scored. It wasn't enough for the Green Rage to pull out a victory as Tucson survived the power barrage, winning 8-6 behind Jose Altuve's two homers, giving Lester his first victory of the season (1-2).

The past week has seen a major power surge in the league, including Giancarlo Stanton's Monday night power display against Livingston and Jedd Gyorko's big Friday night against San Francisco. Hopatcong's Pedro Alvarez was the first to do it this season.

Arenado now is tied for 3rd in the league with 10 home runs on the season and 10th in slugging (.594). Joseph has 4 HRs and 8 RBI on the year in 9 starts, primarily against left-handers, slashing .293/.326/.585 overall.
