The Game 1 pitching duel between Jake Arrieta and Dallas Keuchel came to fruition if only for 6 innings but it was Lorenzo Cain's magic postseason bat that came through for Arkansas yet again for a 2-1 extra-innings win at Tucson.
Arrieta and Keuchel both allowed just 2 hits and one run -- but Arrieta did it over 10 innings, striking out 9 and walking 1. Keuchel went 6 innings and struck out 5 without a walk, and the Golden Falcons bullpen took it from there, combining for 6 innings of 4-hit ball.
Dellin Betances took the loss, yielding 1 run on 2 hits over 2
innings after Arrieta had gone 10 innings. He struck out 3 and walked 1.
With the game tied at 1-1, Cain led off the 12th inning with a single and Rizzo followed with a base on balls. Mitch Moreland grounded out to 2nd, allowing the runners to advance. Khris Davis struck out for the second out before Jhonny Peralta came through with a single to right, scoring Cain. Rizzo tried to score from second but was thrown out at home by Nelson Cruz to end the inning. Still, Arkansas had taken a 2-1 lead heading to the bottom of the 12th.
Carson Smith got the first two outs in the 12th and then Yangervis Solarte singled as pinch-hitter for Juan Uribe. The No. 9 hitter, Michael Brantley, walked to push the tying run to 2nd but Jose Altuve flied to center to end the game.
Tucson nearly pushed across the winning run an inning earlier. Ozuna smacked a one-out double in the bottom of the 11th for his 3rd hit of the game. Luca Duda struck out before Cruz was walked intentionally. The Scorpions responded by pinch-hitting Nolan Arenado for Kyle Schwarber. Arenado grounded to short, forcing Cruz at 2nd to end the 11th.
Kelvin Herrera accounted for half of the Arkansas pen's work with 3 innings
in relief of Keuchel. Britton followed up with 2 innings for the win
before Smith worked the final inning for the save.
Tucson threatened as soon as Keuchel left the game. Herrera
came on to start the 7th and Cruz lined a single down the left-field
line but was gunned down by Blanco as he tried to take 2nd.
The Scorpions jumped out to an early lead before getting shut out for the next 11 innings. Altuve struck out the lead off bottom of the 1st before Ozuna blasted a homer deep down the left-field line for a 1-0 Tucson lead.
The Golden Falcons answered in the 3rd, and again Cain was involved. No. 9 hitter Gregor Blanco drew a 1-out walk and after Buster Posey flied to center, he stole 2nd base. Cain stepped to the plate and slapped a triple into right center as Blanco traipsed home to tie the game at 1-1. Arrieta got a big strikeout of Rizzo to end the inning, stranding Cain at 3rd with game tied.
Besides Cain's triple, the only other hit Arrieta allowed was a 9th-inning single by Rizzo.
Arrieta
tossed 115 pitches to Keuchel's 97 so it'll be interesting to see if
that affects either pitcher's availability for a possible Game 4 start.
It's the third 1-run win among Arkansas's five victories this postseason
and the first 1-run loss for Tucson, which had three of its four
playoff wins thus far come by 1 run. Game 2 is set for tonight in
Tucson, with Jon Lester likely to get the nod for the top-seeded Scorpions
against Matt Harvey for No. 2 Arkansas.
