Philadelphia and Vancouver are now in a virtual tie for first place in the Morris Division, with Philly only percentage points ahead of the Fist. Vancouver's first-round pick Zack Greinke pitched a 3-hit complete game shutout of New Jersey to improve to 5-0 on the season. Meanwhile Philly dropped an 8-7 loss to Las Vegas (yes another one-run game for those of you keeping track at home). Philly was leading by one with two outs in the ninth, but they must have forgotten about the supernatural powers of the Rat Pack. Closer J.J. Putz walked Jim Thome and then promptly gave up the game-winning homer to Joe Mauer.
Hillsborough battled Newark for 13 innings, but ended up pulling out a 4-3 win. The Sugar Bears tied the game up at 3 in the top of the ninth on a 2-run Matt Stairs homer. Nick Markakis won the game in the 13th with a bases-loaded single. Although Hillsborough managed to win the game, they lost the services of their young pitcher Felix Hernandez for a month. After watching the movie Iron Man, Felix had tried to build himself a suit that would help him pitch, but the boot jets sent him flying into a nearby wall. He will not recover nearly as quickly as the movie had led him to believe...
Also lost for a month is Las Vegas' scrappy shortstop David Eckstein. The gutty sparkplug infielder was a replacement for starter Jeff Keppinger who went down with his own injury recently. The tough-as-nails Eckstein met his demise when he tried to carry the team on his back, going 3-3 with a home run. The pesky veteran took the phrase too literally after celebrating his night, and several of his teammates jumped on his back, crushing the gritty player's back. "He's so scrappy" said the Rats' team doctor "that sometimes he thinks he can do anything." It's still not clear how the Rats will replace this loss of scrappiness, but a look to the scrap heap might help.

Wednesday doubleheader recap
Roy Oswalt pitched a gem against South Boston yesterday as the Sharks routed the Gang 10-0. Oswalt pitched a complete game shutout, surrendering only five hits and no walks while striking out six. Oswalt has pitched well in five of his last six starts since coming back from his injury last month. The one low note was a 10-2 loss to Marietta.
Albert Pujols drove in six runs and hit his 39th home run in Philly's 11-3 shellacking of Las Vegas. Brandon Webb won after missing his last start due to injury to improve to 11-7. Reed Johnson also contributed 3 RBIs. The Rat Pack used eight pitchers in the game, including rarely utilized Casey Janssen, who pitched the last three innings. It was Vegas' ninth straight loss.
The Mudcats beat the Animals in the late game yesterday, but lost David Eckstein to injury. Eckstein has been on the disabled list twice already this year as a member of the Endzone Animals and now will give the Mudcats a chance to pay him to sit at home and play his Nintendo Wii.
Newark won twice yesterday becoming the first team to 90 wins on the season. In game one against Hillsborough, Jim Edmonds hit two homers and drove in six runs for the Sugar Bears. Randy Johnson won his 197th career victory. Ryan Howard hit his 50th homer of the season for Hillsborough. Edmonds hit another homer in the second game as John Smoltz started his 300th career game. His seven strikeouts left him four shy of 2000 for his career.
Jose Contreras shut down Vancouver for a 5-0 shutout, though Contreras couldn't make it through the full nine. Contreras lasted eight innings, holding Vancouver to four hits and two walks. Mike Wuertz finished the ninth to preserve the shutout.

Hit the road, Eck

Hoboken's Vicente Padilla was impressive in a 4-hit shutout of the South Boston Gang. Padilla improved to 8-2 and lowered his ERA to 3.93. Padilla also struck out 9 in the game. Also impressive yesterday was Carolina's Roy Halladay, who also 4-hit the Straphangers. Halladay only managed a mere 5 strikeouts.
Philadelphia activated David Eckstein off the disabled list and promptly handed his walking papers. After trying to trade the shortstop over the weekend and getting no bites, Eck was sent packing. Eckstein was batting a respectable .287, though somewhat empty (.693 OPS), but became superfluous when the club acquired Jimmy Rollins from Newark.
Newark blew a 9-8 lead in the bottom of the ninth when Cla Meredith gave up a three-run walk-off home run to Frank Thomas. In the game, Newark also survived a 6-run seventh inning that chased starter Chien-Ming Wang from the game. Newark felt that someone had to be "punished" for this embarrassing loss. So who would you think paid the price? Wang for giving up 7 runs? Meredith for blowing the lead in the final inning? Nick Johnson or Marlon Anderson for each going 0-5? Nope, it was obviously Tim Wakefield's fault! Wakefield was cut to make room for former Sugar Bear Alex Cora. "What the-- I wasn't even on the active roster?" reacted Wakefield after receiving the news. "It's not Tim" said GM Butch Garretson after the game "we just wanted to get Alex on the team again. That guy is a real sparkplug!"

Slap Happy
The Bushslappers are on a roll. The Slappers have now won six in a row and 10 of 11 and are sitting in fifth place overall, 1 1/2 games behind Honolulu. D.C. lost closer Jonathan Papelbon over the weekend and the effect was felt in their most recent game. With an 8-3 lead in the ninth, Joe Nathan and Dan Wheeler proceeded to blow the game and surrendered five runs in the bottom of the ninth to tie it at 8 and send the game to extra innings. Finally in the 12th, Jose Reyes bailed them out with a triple and was sac flied by Matt Holliday. Papelbon will miss around two weeks.

Greene had recently been cut by the Animals, but the club decided to go with Bobby Crosby instead, opting to sign Scott Baker instead of Greene. "I already had my ticket to Philly in hand when I saw the news on Sportscenter" said a heartbroken Greene. "I just can't believe he would do that to me!" Crosby, a former Arkansas Golden Falcon is 2-4 so far in the two games since Eckstein's injury.

Greene had recently been cut by the Animals, but the club decided to go with Bobby Crosby instead, opting to sign Scott Baker instead of Greene. "I already had my ticket to Philly in hand when I saw the news on Sportscenter" said a heartbroken Greene. "I just can't believe he would do that to me!" Crosby, a former Arkansas Golden Falcon is 2-4 so far in the two games since Eckstein's injury.

The Gang's all here
The Mudcat moves seem to have worked for one game anyway. The Cats edged the first-place Animals 4-3 yesterday behind a solid outing from Roy Halladay (though he didn't figure into the decision) and three-hit games from Rocco Baldelli and Aramis Ramirez.

Cliff Lee is making a case to stick in the Sharks rotation with a solid outing yesterday against the Rat Pack. Lee is now 1-1 with a 2.77 ERA in two starts filling in for the injured Jered Weaver.
South Boston has been on a little bit of a run lately, winning their fifth straight against Marietta yesterday. Aaron Harang shut down the Mighty Men for 7 innings, allowing only an unearned run and striking out 10. Poor Jeff Suppan finally pitched an outing for Marietta without getting destroyed, but had to settle for the loss (and lowering...yes lowering... his ERA to 10.13). During the game Matt Diaz extended his hitting streak to a league-high 23 games, besting Miguel Cabrera's earlier streak of 22.
Hoboken certainly got their revenge on Tuesday's smackdown from Newark. Hoboken pounded on the Sugar Bears to a 13-5 tune. The Cutters had 21 hits in total. Geoff Jenkins was 5-6 with 3 RBIs and Miguel Cabrera was 4-5 with 4 RBIs and a homer.
Philly's obsession with Khalil Greene continues as the Animals re-signed the shortstop for the second time this season. His playing time should be limited though as the club activated David Eckstein from his month-long sting on the DL.

Oswalt back on track
There was a bit of a pitchers' duel in Vegas yesterday. South Boston's Aaron Harang and Las Vegas' Chris Young battled it out. Young gave way to the bullpen in the sixth, but Harang took a 1-0 shutout into the eighth before surrendering two runs in the bottom half of the inning. There were only 11 hits between the two teams in the game.
Honolulu's Roy Oswalt finally straightened out his season. After getting clobbered in his first two starts, Oswalt turned in a complete game two-hit performance against Arkansas, surrendering only one run. Oswalt struck out 6.
