Clayton Kershaw set a new DMBL record for most career starts (528), passing Zack Greinke, and in the process picked up a win (No. 206) to overtake Curt Schilling for 7th in career victories.
The 38-year-old lefty went 7 innings, scattering 5 hits and 1 run while striking out 3 and walking a batter on Thursday night. It was plenty good enough as Hoboken bats woke up and pounded L.A. by a score of 10-1.
Kershaw, who started the season with Merrill Creek before getting released ahead of the trade deadline before returning to Hoboken, took the mound with 527 starts, tied with Greinke, who last pitched in 2023 with Hillsborough, and 205 career wins, tied with Schilling. His next victory will match Pedro Martinez for 6th all-time with 207 wins and he's probably has as many as 4 starts to get it done. With his retirement at season's end already announced, Kershaw isn't likely to catch Roger Clemens at No. 5 (211 wins). This season, he's become the career leader in losses with 175 though Justin Verlander of Merrill Creek is right behind him with 173. Both passed Tom Glavine (172) in recent months.
Greinke could end 2026 ranked 3rd in all-time starts, as Verlander sits at 525 starts with 20 games remaining. If he can stay healthy, Verlander would be in line to make 4 more starts, which would project him to 529, passing Greinke in a scheduled start at San Francisco on Sept. 25. In his most recent start, Verlander surpassed Greinke (3,393.7) for most innings pitched, moving into 2nd all-time (3,398). He's within striking distance of all-time leader Greg Maddux (3,415), just 17.3 innings away. Verlander would need to average just 4.3 innings over those last 4 starts to become the DMBL's career leader and if all goes well, he could set the new record with one start to spare.
