Morneau, Falcons, come up just short

Hillsborough and Arkansas battled to an 11-10 final. The Falcons held a 10-4 lead after 7, but the Hitmen scored 3 runs in the 8th to bring it to 10-7. The Falcons got in trouble quickly in the 9th when they gave up a leadoff single to Ryan Theriot. Pitcher Joakim Soria walked the next batter then gave up a single to load the bases. After striking out the next batter, Soria gave up the salami to Aubrey Huff, ending the game. Mike Lowell also hit a pair of home runs and drove in 4 runs. On the losing side, the Falcons were almost singlehandedly carried by Justin Morneau, who hit 3 home runs and had 8 RBIs in the contest.

Las Vegas outlasted the Sardines in extra innings yesterday, winning 5-4 in 14 innings. Vladimir Guerrero hit a 2-run homer, his second of the game, in the 14th to take a 5-3 lead. Carlos Quentin answered with a solo shot, but it wasn't enough. Guerrero's two home runs tied Mark McGwire for 10th on the all time list. Next up, Frank Thomas (384) and Juan Gonzalez (385).

Clayton Kershaw earned his first DMBL victory yesterday, a 9-2 blowout against the Mighty Men. Kershaw pitched 7 shutout innings and struck out 7 while giving up only 6 hits.

Roy Halladay outduelled Zack Greinke in a 3-2 Mudcat victory. Halladay pitched 8 innings, giving up 2 runs on 8 hits with 7 strikeouts. Hard luck loser Greinke pitched an 8-inning complete game and gave up 3 runs on 9 hits. Both pitchers have 7 wins on the season.

Vegas makes power play

Wow, after a nice 11-game winning streak, Vancouver dropped two of three to 13th place New Jersey. Both losses were extra-inning affairs. Yesterday the Fist sent Jake Peavy out to try to expand on his DMBL wins lead, but he ended up with a no-decision despite only giving up 2 runs. Once again, Fist manager Darren Daulton left a reliever in too long, this time Hideki Okajima was in his fourth(!) inning of relief and gave up a solo home run to Josh Fields. Vancouver heads over to Newark today to start a three-game set with the Hanover Division leaders.

It looked like Newark suffered a big hit after they lost two of their rotation members - first James Shields, and now Randy Johnson. Joe Saunders has done an admirable job so far (2-1, 2.91 in 3 starts), but no one expected much out of Johnson's replacement, David Bush. Bush had been a full-time member of the Sugar Bears before last year where he only made one disastrous start. But the Sugar Bears are nothing if not loyal, even to their scrubs. And Bush repaid that loyalty in spades with a complete-game, 4-hit shutout of the Hitmen. Bush struck out 10 batters in only his second career complete game (and first since 2005). Bush's next turn in the rotation would be Sunday against D.C., however Shields is expected to return from the disabled list that day. Will Butch Garretson tempt fate and start Bush against the Bushslappers?

Vegas pulled off the blockbuster trade of the season so far, acquiring slugger Vladimir Guerrero from Blue Ridge for Hunter Pence, Jeremy Hermida, Gavin Floyd and a draft pick. Guerrero had spent his entire 10-year career for the same franchise, through 3 different owners and 5 different name changes. Guerrero has continued to put up big numbers this season (.329/.371/.534, 19 HR, 71 RBI) and was a backup on this year's All-Star team. Hunter Pence was only briefly a member of the Rat Pack - he was acquired June 23 from the Hoboken Cutters, but was useless for the Rat Pack (.208/.240/.333). Hermida was a solid player for the Rats and Floyd was in AAA.

Guerrero cycles past Philly

You've probably already noticed that Vlad Guerrero hit for the cycle in Blue Ridge's 8-1 victory over Philly yesterday. Guerrero got the hardest one out of the way immediately, with a triple in the first inning that gave the Bombers a 1-0 lead. Guerrero led off the 4th with a double, scoring when the next batter, Prince Fielder, drove him in. Things looked bad when Guerrero grounded out in the 6th, but bounced back big time in the 8th with a two-run homer. With the hardest ones out of the way, Guerrero hoped for one more chance in the ninth. Thanks to the Bombers offense coming alive, Vlad got his at bat in the ninth and lined the needed single to right field. Guerrero is the first player to hit for the cycle since Philly's Albert Pujols and Vancouver's Eric Chavez achieved the feat in back to back days in 2006.

Roy Oswalt and Justin Verlander dueled it out to a double-complete game 1-0 final. The score was 0-0 right up til the 9th inning when Brad Hawpe led off the bottom half of the inning with a fly ball that just cleared the fence. Verlander gave up only three hits and three walks in his nine, while striking out 6. Verlander, who got an awful start to the season, has been excellent lately, giving up one run or less in four of his last five starts. Oswalt was also very effective, giving up one run on 4 hits and 3 walks while striking out 9.

Arkansas and D.C. slugged it out for 13 innings yesterday, with the Falcons emerging on top of an 8-7 decision. After D.C. established a 7-4 lead, the Falcons had to rally in the 6th and 7th to tie up the game. It would remain tied for another five innings until Brandon Phillips hit a nubbler to the left side of the infield that Jose Reyes was unable to get to in time. David Wright, breaking with the pitch, scored easily from third.

John Smoltz, who was demoted for three days to AAA Dublin, came back in full force by shutting out the Straphangers 4-0. Smoltz held the Hangmen to only five hits and struck out 12. B.J. Upton and Kurt Suzuki had four of the five hits. The Sugar Bears were held to only 6 hits in the game, but Phil Hughes and the Sardine City pen gave up 8 walks.

The first deal during the 2008 regular season was just completed today. The Philadelphia Endzone Animals exchanged farmhand pitchers with division rival Vancouver. Vancouver re-acquired lefty Scott Olsen, who had struggled with the club last season. Philadelphia received Kyle Kendrick in return. Kendrick was drafted to give the Fist some rotation depth, but with the strength of the rotation and Rich Hill available to spot start, Kendrick was expendable. Philly will send Kendrick to AAA Trenton for the time being, but he may be called up if Yovani Gallardo or Jason Bergmann continue to struggle.

Carolina sweeps, Newark avoids sweep

Carolina completed the sweep of first-place Philadelphia thanks to an excellent performance from Carlos Zambrano. Zambrano threw seven innings of three-hit ball and allowed only one run while striking out eleven and walking three. Carolina gave Johan Santana only his second loss of the season.

Newark, on the other hand, avoided the sweep by handing the Cutters a 10-3 loss. Gregg Zaun hit a 3-run homer rookie Tony Saunders picked up his second win on the season. Saunders is perhaps the latest in a line of WTF Sugar Bear starters - scrap heap pickups that end up winning double digits for the Sugar Bears. Will Saunders join the John Thomsons and Mike Graces and become another Newark legend? With that powerhouse offense behind him, why not?

In case you missed the late transactions last night, Arkansas signed a couple of DMBL veterans to help fill out platoon roles. Craig Biggio, who played briefly for Hoboken this year, and Bernie Williams, recently released by Sardine City, were brought on board. "We needed some veteran leadership on this team." said owner Stump Matiash. "We're tired of the constant keg parties and video game tournaments after games." Arkansas is currently two games back of sixth-place Vancouver for the final wild card spot.

South Boston broke Marietta's seven game winning streak with a 14-8 romp. Vlad Guerrero posted a monster 5-6 night with 6 RBIs and a homer. The Gang had a total of 20 hits. Marietta actually had an 8-5 lead in the ninth inning and the usually reliable Mariano Rivera on the mound, but Rivera gave up five straight singles to lead off the inning and then a homer to Prince Fielder. The Gang scored a total of nine runs in the inning when all was said and done.

Backman's Blunder

The Cutters and Jon Garland were cruising to a 1-0 victory yesterday over the Bushslappers, when they hit a bit of a snag. Manager Wally Backman decided that after Garland let Carl Crawford reach on a single that it would be time to go to the pen. Garland had pitched brilliantly, allowing only 4 hits and one walk, but he was already at 115 pitches. Backman went to Juan Rincon to close the game for some reason. Rincon walked two of the next three batters and served up the grand slam to Lyle Overbay. Game over. So where was Izzy? The Hoboken closer had not pitched in the last two days so he should have been available. "We did not feel that the matchup suited Izzy's talents" said Backman after the game. "Juan had expressed a desire to close, so we gave him one."

Newark roughed up Vancouver's pitching yesterday 18-6. Five of the six pitchers gave up runs and Wes Littleton was lost for two weeks. "A bullpen shakeup is coming" said pitching coach Erik Hanson. Alan Embree was signed off the waiver wire to fill in. "We needed a lefty to help us through the Newark series" said manager Darren Daulton.

Vlad Guerrero and Jim Edmonds recently drove in their 1000th career run. They became just the 17th and 18th in DMBL history to achieve the feat. Next on the list is Honolulu's Jason Giambi at 948. Hillsborough's Carlos Delgado (930) would need a big year to do it this season. New Jersey's Mike Piazza moved further up the list, tying Gary Sheffield at fifth with his 1263rd RBI last night. Juan Gonzalez holds the #4 spot at 1283, so we may have another Piazza update soon.

Sugar Bears stymied (finally!)

Well, it finally happened, the Sugar Bears lost their first game and were held in check by Hillsborough rookie Justin Verlander. Verlander only surrendered two earned runs (3 total) in six innings and struck out five. This was Newark's first game against a formidable right-handed foe - yesterday Josh Beckett matchup didn't count).

Philly's Johan Santana had the best pitching line of the season so far. Santana pitched a complete game shutout of Las Vegas, surrendering only four hits, no walks and striking out 14 Rats. Santana improved to 2-0 on the season and lowered his ERA to 1.13. Philly extended their undefeated record to 6-0.

Joining Philly in the ranks of the undefeated, Arkansas also got a good performance from veteran ace Roger Clemens. Clemens pitched eight innings against Sardine City, striking out eight and surrendering only two runs on four hits.

South Boston broke out of the winless column and edged the Sharks 5-4 behind Chris Carpenter's strong outing. The Gang got a big lift from struggling Vladimir Guerrero, who went 2-4 with a homer and four RBIs.

The first part of Marietta's Great Pitching Platoon Experiment was a dud yesterday as starter Mark Hendrickson was pounded by the Bushslappers. "It's only one game" said Hendrickson after he was pulled in the sixth inning. "Stupid Tomko is already talking shit." Brett Tomko is the other member of the home/away platoon.
