Philadelphia broke their recent hex and came out on top of Las Vegas yesterday with a 12-10 win. The Animals jumped out to an early 7-2 lead but the Rat Pack came back and led 10-7 by the end of the 6th. Albert Pujols tied up the game at 10 in the 8th inning with a 2-run homer, then Jorge Posada hit a 2-run homer in the following inning to give the Animals the win. The Animals desparately needed the win after dropping into double-digit games behind Morris Division-leading Vancouver.
Newark extended their winning streak to 11 games after a 5-3 defeat of the Hitmen. The Hitmen made a noble effort to come back in the later stages of the game, but fell short. Jack Cust hit his 40th homer of the season for Newark and Chien Ming Wang improved to 12-5 on the season. Hillsborough lost ground in the playoff race as both Sardine City and Tampa Bay won their respective games. The Plunkers are now only one game behind Hillsborough, while Sardine City trails by 3 games.
Arkansas and Carolina keep falling deeper and deeper into irrelevance, as far as the playoff race is concerned. The Falcons dropped their 6th straight game, a 5-3 loss to the aforementioned Straphangers. Meanwhile Carolina lost to the Cutters 5-3 making it 4 in a row for the Mudcats.
Two DL moves were made yesterday. Las Vegas once again turns to Jason Hirsh to patch up their rotation. Tim Lincecum, who replaced injured Erik Bedard in the rotation, was placed on the DL to make room. Hirsh was 0-2 with a 3.71 ERA and 1.46 WHIP in 4 starts during his last tour of duty with the team. Meanwhile, Sardine City picked up journeyman catcher Yorvit Torrealba to fill in while Miguel Olivo recuperates. Torrealba had previously played for Arkansas where he briefly replaced Olivo as well.

Division leads shrink as top cats fall
Hoboken stunned the Rat Pack yesterday 5-1 behind Matt Garza's 7 inning effort. Aaron Rowand was 3-5 and Hunter Pence had 2 RBIs to help the Cutters pull off the upset. The Rat Pack saw their lead drop to 1/2 a game as the Sugar Bears bested Tampa Bay 7-1. Jack Cust had a homer and 3 RBIs and James Shields pitched 8 innings for the W. The loss knocks the Plunkers back down to .500.
Meanwhile, Vancouver's lead in the Morris Division shrank to 1 1/2 games as the Fist dropped a 5-3 decision to the Sardine City Straphangers. Fausto Carmona pitched a complete game and improved to 5-3 on the season. Kurt Suzuki hit two homers in the win. The Sardines have now won 9 of their last 12. The slumping Endzone Animals were able to capitalize on the loss by taking a 6-3 win over the Falcons. Yovani Gallardo won his 8th of the season by holding the Falcons to 3 hits and 3 runs over 6 innings. Albert Pujols was 3-4 with 3 RBIs in the contest.

Buddahs drop 9 in a row, Rats lose first
The Buddahs were so full of hope after winning their opening day matchup, but things have gone very sour since then. Team Buddah has now lost their 9th straight game after a 4-3 nailbiter to the Morris-leading D.C. Bushslappers. In the nine game skid, the Buddahs have been shut out three times and have scored more than 3 runs only once. New Jersey faces Hoboken tomorrow - the only team that they have beaten thus far - and then they face Marietta Sunday, so maybe they'll break that slide yet...
Roy Halladay shut out the Falcons yesterday in a 6-hit complete game. For Halladay it was his first win of the season. Halladay moved into the top 10 in career shutouts, tied with Andy Pettitte. Grady Sizemore's 3-run homer in the third gave the Mudcats all the runs they'd need, though they added a few more just for good measure.
Rich Hill of Vancouver had the other shutout of the day, though not a complete game. Hill only pitched six innings, but struck out 7 in the 5-0 victory over the Bombers. Hill had been roughed up in his previous two starts - he had a 17.36 ERA entering the game - so it was good to see the lefty right his ship, at least for one start. Troy Percival pitched a 3-inning save, his first since 2005 when he was with the Phoenix Dragons.
Sardine City's Fausto Carmona returned from injury (perhaps a bit early?) and was rocked by the Mighty Men. Carmona lasted only two innings and gave up six runs on seven hits and three walks. Meanwhile Marietta's Daniel Cabrera was brilliant, picking up his first career complete game and holding the Sardines to one earned run on five hits, while striking out eight. Third baseman Ryan Braun committed his sixth error of the season in the game.
Finally, the Rat Pack was dealt their first loss of the season, an 18-5 drubbing by the Sugar Bears. Jack Cust had two home runs and 6 RBIs and Bobby Abreu was 4-6 with 4 runs and 3 RBIs to help the Sugar Bears remind everyone that they are still the team to beat. The two clubs face each other again today - remember that this week they are offering a free preview of the DMBL Extra Innings package!

D.C. loses first; Falcons pounded by Rats
Look for a new This Week in the DMBL tonight!
The Bushslappers finally lost their first game, as the Hitmen defeated them 8-3 Sunday. Hillsborough scored five runs in the 7th and 8th innings to give them a healthy lead. Dan Haren got the win after pitching six innings and surrendering only 2 runs on 7 hits. Dmitri Young, Ryan Howard, and Carlos Lee each had 2 RBIs.
The Rat Pack spanked the winless Falcons 15-2 after a ridiculous 11-run fifth inning. Reliever Jonathan Broxton took the biggest brunt of the attack, surrendering eight runs in 1.1 innings and issuing six walks. Starter Jeremy Bonderman left the game in the first inning with a minor injury but will make his next start. Jeff Keppinger was 4-6 for the Rat Pack and is batting .441 on the season.
Newark's Jack Cust had quite the weekend: After hitting a home run in Saturday's game, Cust followed it up with two more in the 4-2 loss to Marietta. Then in the second game against Hoboken, Cust went 3-4 to raise his average to .382.
Speaking of the Hoboken-Newark game, the Cutters battled back twice to tie the game, but ended up on the short end of the stick in the end. After Newark went up 4-2, the Cutters tied the game after Aaron Rowand hit an RBI single in the seventh. But Newark took a 7-4 lead after back to back homers by Jarrod Saltalamacchia and Mike Fontenot. Hanley Ramirez hit a two-run shot to get to within one the next inning and then, in the ninth, the Cutters scored one more to tie it up, though they left the bases loaded at the end. Newark finally went ahead for good when Bobby Abreu drove in the winning run in the bottom of the 12th.
Vancouver continues to struggle, losing six of their last seven, after falling to D.C. 4-2. Kelvim Escobar pitched 8 solid innings for the win. Brian McCann had a 2-run double in the top of the ninth to give the Slappers the lead and Jonathan Papelbon closed it out for his third save.
