With a playoff spot already locked up, the Newark Sugar Bears have their sights set on the Hanover Division. Yesterday's 6-0 blanking of D.C. was their 8th win in a row, giving them a magic number of 7 to clinch the division. James Shields held the O-Bombers to only 5 hits and 3 walks in gaining his 12th win of the year. Manny Ramirez (3) and Jack Cust (2) drove in 5 of the 6 runs for Newark.
Meanwhile, nothing much changed in the Morris Division. Carolina dropped an 8-7 decision to Vancouver and Hillsborough was shellacked by Arkansas 14-4, so the Cats remain 2 games out of first. Philly edged Blue Ridge 6-4 to remain 2 1/2 games out of a playoff spot. The Falcons' win evens their record up at 72-72, but they remain 5 games out of 6th.
John Danks improved to 17-6 on the season and Mariano Rivera saved his 29th in a 3-2 Mighty Men victory over Hoboken. Danks held the Cutters to 4 hits in 8.2 innings, allowing only 2 runs (1 earned) and striking out 6. Aaron Cook, who went the distance, pitched well as well, giving up 6 hits and 3 runs in his 8 innings of work, but ended up with a hard loss.

Pena, Cook, take honors
We'll have more on the trades as the dust settles later, but for now we're going to jump right into the Players of the Week...
Last season, Carlos Pena fulfilled a lot of the hype that he never lived up to. After 3 seasons spent as a bit player on three different teams, Las Vegas made Pena their number one pick in 2008. Pena went on to smack 53 home runs and drive in 137 runs with a 1.025 OPS. In 2009, Pena isn't enjoying the same monster year, but he's putting up a very good .274/.423/.557 line with 23 homers and 64 RBIs. This week, Pena takes the JR Cigars Smokin' Batter of the Week prize. Pena batted .474 with a 1.545 OPS, 3 homers, 5 runs and 8 RBIs.
Other top batters: Arkansas' Lance Berkman (.458/.500/1.042, 10 RBI, 4 HR), Newark's J.D. Drew (.393/.452/.857, 3 HR, 10 RBIs), Sardine City's B.J. Upton (.425/.581/.696) and Ryan Braun (.467/.500/.633), Marietta's Adrian Gonzalez (.364/.462/.773, 3 HR), and Hoboken's Marlon Byrd (.407/.467/.741, 8 R).
Aaron Cook has had a bit of a rough season this year with the Cutters. Despite his 9-7 record, he has a 5.47 ERA and 1.73 WHIP. It's about on par with his season from last year when he went 9-12 with a 5.72 ERA and 1.56 WHIP. But this week, cook was an All-Star. In his two starts, Cook went 2-0 with an 0.61 ERA and 0.82 WHIP in 14.2 innings. Good enough to earn the Falling Sand Pitcher of the Week Award.
Other notables: D.C.'s Erik Bedard (0-0, 2.13, 0.95 WHIP, 17 K), Newark's Randy Johnson (2-0, 2.02, 1.35 WHIP, 13 K), Blue Ridge's Ted Lilly (1-0, 2.08, 1.08) and Adam Wainwright (0-1, 2.57, 0.86) and Marietta's Ryan Dempster (0-0, 2.53, 1.41).

D.C., Arkansas battle it out
After coming out of the gates roaring, the Iron Fist have fallen flat in the last three games. After getting pounded by Sardine City, the Fist have now lost 7-6 to the offensively-challenged Mudcats. Once again, the Fist were in the lead early on, taking on a 4-1 lead, then 5-3 going into the bottom of the seventh. Then the Mudcats scored four runs in that disastrous inning and gave the Cats the lead for good.
D.C. and Arkansas slugged it out to a 14-13 Bushslapper win yesterday. The Slappers went up 8-1 after a six-run second inning, but the Falcons exploded with an eight-run third, taking a 9-8 lead. D.C. answered the next inning with five runs of their own, going up 13-9. D.C. would score a key insurance run in the eighth off a Jeff Kent solo homer. The Falcons crept back with a pair of runs in the final two frames, but they ended up one shy as Barry Bonds struck out in the final at bat. The two teams combined for ten home runs in the game and 32 hits.
Hoboken's Aaron Cook pitched seven shutout innings, holding the Mighty Men to six hits, in an 8-0 victory. Ian Kinsler was 3-4 with a homer and 3 RBIs.
Philly survived a late rally by Blue Ridge to squeek into a 7-6 victory. Prince Fielder hit a two-run shot in the bottom of the ninth to bring the game to within one run, but Chris Snyder struck out with two runners on to give the win to the Animals.
