Tucson's Joe Ryan came within two outs of the DMBL's first no-hitter of 2026, foiled by a 9th-inning infield hit from a recently signed free agent.
Trevor Larnach, signed two days earlier to fill in for the injured Miguel Andujar, reached on an infield single to shortstop with one out in the 9th to break up Ryan's no-hit bid. He was eliminated on the next play when Josh Naylor grounded into a game-ending double play. The King Snakes handled Hoboken, 6-0, on Wednesday night at home.Ryan finished with 5 strikeouts and 1 walk across 99 pitches, 65 for strikes for a .657 strike percentage. He overcame a 31-minute rain delay in the bottom of the 4th while the King Snakes were batting. He faced one batter beyond the minimum as his only blemish before the 9th was a 3rd inning walk to Masyn Winn, who then stole 2nd and advanced to 3rd when Larnach grounded out to 2nd. Winn was stranded when Naylor grounded out to short to end the inning.
The King Snakes did their damage in the 2nd, 3rd, and 6th innings. Three straight one-out hits plated two runs in the 2nd: Jose Altuve singled before back-to-back doubles by Evan Carter and Agustin Ramirez. Trea Turner led off the 3rd with a walk before Mike Soroka struck out two but then Matt Olson doubled home Turner before Altuve launched a two-run home run for a 5-0 lead. Olson extended the lead in the 6th singling home Jordan Westburg, who had doubled earlier.
Ryan has yet to let up a run in two starts this season, going 7 innings against Empire City in his 2026 debut. In addition to his 0.00 ERA, Ryan has a 0.31 WHIP, with 14 Ks and 2 walks in 16 innings so far.
Ryan wasn't the only player who had a big first week. Jared Triolo, filling in for injured 1B Freddie Freeman for Poovey Farms, went 5-for-5 and Shohei Ohtani blasted 3 HR and collected 7 RBI (he had 8 through 3 games) in a 12-2 drubbing of Green Lake in their 4th game of the season.
