Hendricks no-hits Hoboken for 8+ innings

Hopatcong's Kyle Hendricks came within two outs of throwing the 22nd no-hitter in DMBL history, the first in almost a year, tossing 7 perfect innings against Hoboken.

The 29-year-old Dartmouth grad needed only 91 pitches to shut down Hoboken, 5-0, on Wednesday, striking out 6 and walking 1. Hendricks (1-5) won for the first time this year (1-5). His Game Score of 90 was the second-best in the league so far this season. Trevor Cahill (2-5) was tagged for 5 runs on 9 hits overs 5 1/3 innings, taking the loss for Hoboken.

Hendricks lost his bid for a perfect game when he walked Maikel Franco with two out in the 8th. Randall Grichuk grounded out to short to end the 8th. Robbie Grossman, pinch-hitting for Kyle Schwarber, flied out to center leading off the 9th, putting Hendricks just two outs away from a no-hitter.

Enrique Hernandez laced a triple deep to right center, spoiling the no-hit bid. Jorge Polanco lined out to second, bringing up Francisco Cervelli to pinch-hit for Whit Merrifield, who popped out to first to end the game.

It would have been the second no-hitter in franchise history, after Josh Tomlin's masterpiece in 2012.

Nick Castellanos had the first hit of the game, a double, two batters after Joey Votto and Robinson Cano led off the game with back-to-back walks. Curtis Granderson led off the 2nd inning with a bomb to make it 3-0. In the 4th inning, he was issued a one-out walk, scoring after singles by Salvador Perez and Jose Iglesias for a 4-0 lead. Granderson played a part in making it 5-0, leading off the 6th with a double, taking 3rd on a groundout before scoring on a single by Igelsias.

Cahill (2-5) walked 4 and struck out 4 in 5+ innings for the Cutters. Diego Castillo tossed a hitless 2 2/3 innings, walking 2.
