Pederson homers twice to back Kluber

Joc Pederson smacked 2 solo home runs to back Corey Kluber's 4th win of the postseason, leading Sardine City to a 5-2 win in Game 3 over Hoboken.

The home win gets the 4th-seeded Straphangers back into the series with their first victory against the 3rd-seeded Cutters, and now trail 2 games to 1.

Kluber (4-0) held Hoboken to 4 hits and 1 run over 6 1/3 innings. He struck out 9 and walked 3. Ottavino registered the save, his second of these playoffs. Scherzer (1-3) took the loss, surrendering 8 hits and 4 runs in 5 1/3 innings. He struck out 9 and walked 2.

Devon Travis worked a 2-out walk in the 2nd and scored the game's first run on Yasmani Grandal's double down the right-field line, for a 1-0 Hoboken lead.

Sardine City answered in the bottom of the second, tying the game on Eric Hosmer's solo home run deep to center and threatened more. Stephen Piscotty was plunked with the next pitch and Addison Russell doubled down the first-base line to put two in scoring position for the Straphangers. Ryan Schimpf struck out and Yelich was issued an intentional walk to load the bases for Evan Longoria. Scherzer struck out Longoria to end the inning, leaving the bases jammed.

The game remained tied at 1-1 until the bottom of the 5th, when Pederson hit his first homer deep to right center.

The next inning, Sardine City tacked on two more runs. Piscotty led off with a single and Russell struck out before Scherzer walked Schimpf, and that's when he got the hook after 117 pitches. Nate Jones came on to face Yelich with two runners on and surrendered a double deep to left, scoring both runners for a 4-1 lead. Jones got out of the inning, getting Longoria to fly to center before striking out Seager.

In the top of the 7th, Hoboken got runners on to chase Kluber. Travis led off with a walk and Grandal struck out before Ben Zobrist worked out a walk, and that was it for Kluber after 110 pitches. Pedro Baez entered the game with two men on and 1 out. He struck out Adam Eaton but then a wild pitch put both runners in scoring position for Matt Joyce but he flied out to right, stranding both runners and trailing 4-1.

Pederson led off the bottom of the 7th with another solo shot deep to right, extending the lead to 5-1.

Hector Rondon started the 8th for Sardine City and was greeted by Miguel Cabrera with a homer deep down the left-field line, cutting the lead to 5-2. David Ortiz followed with a double down the first-base line but any threat was short-lived as Rondon got two ground-outs and a strikeout to get through the inning.

Adam Ottavino worked the 9th inning for Sardine City, allowing just a lead-off walk to Grandal before closing out the game for a 5-2 final in favor of the Straphangers.

Yelich went 3-for-3 out of the leadoff spot, with 2 RBI as well as intention walk. Pederson was 2-for-4, both hits were solo home runs. Cabrera and Eaton both had two hits for Hoboken.

Hoboken finished with 2 runs on 6 hits and left 8 men on base. Sardine City had 10 hits and 5 runs, leaving 9 on base.

Game 4 is scheduled for Saturday night in Sardine City, with the Cutters leading the series 2 games to 1.
