Stanton eclipses career strikeout record, breaks into top 10 career HRs

Giancarlo Stanton supplanted Alex Rodriguez in the record books, setting a new DMBL mark for career strikeouts.

Stanton entered the season with 2,144 strikeouts, right behind Manny Ramirez (2,161), trailing A-Rod by 69 strikeouts (2,213), and just ahead of Miguel Cabrera (2,116).

The record-tying and -breaking strikeouts likely came in a May 15 matchup against the Tucson King Snakes, a 6-1 victory, in which Stanton struck out three times against Lucas Giolito, Jake Latz, and Will Vest.

It's not all bad for Stanton in 2026. With 17 home runs, currently 4th in the league, he's rocketed up the all-time HR list. The 17 home runs already almost as many as he's hit in recent year (22 last year and 20 in 2023) and he's on a current pace to drill 51.

The slugger opened the season with 437 homers, 12th all-time, and has since surpassed a bunched up field of Sammy Sosa (446), Vladimir Guerrero (447), and Ken Griffey, Jr. (448), to enter the top 10. Now with 454 HRs, Stanton soon will pass Chipper Jones, whom he trails by just 3 at No. 8 (457). His current projection of 51 HRs would have him finish the season with 488 dongs.

On his radar next is David Ortiz, who sits at No. 7 with 483 HRs. Stanton would need to belt 46 HRs in 2026 to reach Ortiz. He'd have pick up the pace and blast 61 to catch Ramirez (498) at No. 6 this year and once he gets there, he's within striking distance of Cabrera at No. 5 (502) -- just 65 away. Whether he reaches those two in 2026 is up in the air but he'll certainly have to play in 2027 to get to Jim Thome, who sits comfortably at No. 4 (531).

In his 15th DMBL season, the 36-year-old has been limited by injuries or platoons in recent years. But 2026 already is looking like a rebound season, the first time he'll make more than 77 starts since 2022. Stanton had slugged 329 HRs in nine seasons (36.5/year) before missing the whole of 2020 due to injury. Since then, his power production dropped by half (108 HRs, 18/year) due in part to making just 425 starts (71/year).

Originally drafted as a prospect by Hoboken as Mike Stanton, he debuted there in 2011 before being traded to Philly for Roy Halladay and a 6th ahead of the 2012 trade deadline. Stanton moved with the franchise from Philly to Allentown in 2014 and then was dealt to Marietta ahead of the 2018 keeper lists for SS Didi Gregorius, 1B Mark Reynolds, and RP Matt Albers.

Stanton only missed two games between 2015 and 2018, including a Mitchell Award campaign for Allentown in 2016 when he struck out a career-high 222 times (the middle season of a three-year run of 200+ strikeouts) but also blasted a career-high 60 HRs. He would drill 59 dongs in 2018 for Marietta, which included career-bests of 144 RBI and 110 runs. Of his 454 career home runs, 151 were for Marietta, 143 for Allentown, and 79 and counting for Philly.

The 6-5, 245-pound former OF-now-DH played a couple of seasons in Merrill Creek (2024 and part of 2025) before the Mudskippers sent him to Philly at last year's deadline with C Shea Langeliers and 2B Otto Lopez for 2nd, 5th, and 8th rounders (those picks would turn into SP Stephen Kolek, 1B Andrew Vaughn, and 3B Coby Mayo).
