The Mighty Men stayed a live by edging past the Sugar Bears 3-2 yesterday. John Danks has now won the only two games for the Mighty Men with an 8-inning, 5-hit effort yesterday in which he gave up 2 runs and struck out 9. Javier Vazquez pitched a complete game in defeat, striking out 8 and giving up 6 hits. Jason Bay gave the Mighty Men a 2-0 lead in the 2nd with a 2-run homer, then Ichiro Suzuki singled in Chone Figgins in the 3rd to extend the lead to 3-0. The Sugar Bears finally got on the board in the 7th with back to back home runs from Jorge Posada and Kendry Morales. Mariano Rivera pitched a perfect 9th to earn his first playoff save this year.
Bridgewater will try to close out their series with Vancouver at the Irondome tonight. Randy Wells will face Chris Carpenter. Carpenter pitched 4 scoreless inning in game 1 against Vancouver but was removed after a rain delay. Randy Wells pitched a solid game to earn the win in game 3 against the Mallers.

Three-way in the Morris Division
There's a three-way tie atop the Morris Division as the two leaders fell and the Mallers took advantage. Bridgewater came from behind to defeat Sardine City 4-2 with a 3-run 8th inning. With the score 2-1 in the Sardines' favor, Brian McCann hit a 3-run homer to give the Mallers the lead. Andrew Bailey pitched a scoreless 9th for his league-leading 8th save.
Meanwhile, Carolina was pummeled by Vegas 10-2. Matt Kemp was 2-5 with 3 RBIs and Dan Uggla was 3-4 to lead the Vegas offensive attack, while Tim Lincecum improved to 4-1 with a solid 7 inning performance.
The other division leader, Philadelphia, dropped a 7-3 decision to Amityville as the Ant Slayers scored 4 unanswered runs in the 8th, including three consecutive home runs from Alex Rodriguez, Jason Kubel and Geoff Blum.

Braun, Danks take first week honors
It's our first Weekly Awards post of the 2010 season!
The first JR Cigars Smokin' Batter of the Week goes to Sardine City's Ryan Braun. Braun was first in the league in slugging (.969) and tied for first in RBI(12) and homers (5), 3rd in OBP (.472) and 4th in batting average (.406). The Sardines got off to a slow start this year - in fact they were the last team to win their first game. But after that 0-4 start, the Straphangers won their next four and now sit even at 4-4.
Other notable batters: Arkansas' Chris Coghlan (.467/.543/.500), Blue Ridge's Hunter Pence (.438/.500/.781, 12 RBIs), Marietta's Kevin Youkilis (.344/.405/.906, 5 HR, 10 RBIs), and Philly's Albert Pujols (.432/.463/.676).

Mighty Men advance, face Carolina
John Danks once again stymied the Iron Fist, this time blanking the 2008 champs on 3 hits in 8 innings. Ben Sheets did better his second time around, pitching 6.1 innings and yielding only 2 runs on 4 hits, but it was enough to finish off Vancouver and send the Mighty Men to round two. All the scoring in the game came in the 7th inning. Jason Bay started things off with a single after the first batter was out. Kurt Suzuki singled next chasing Sheets in favor of reliever Russ Springer. Springer got Nick Punto to ground out, catching Bay trying to score, but Orlando Hudson came through with a 2-run double that cleared the bases. And that was it. Marietta managed only 6 hits but that was double what Vancouver could gather.
Tonight, Hillsborough hosts Las Vegas in their decisive game 5 matchup, pitting Dan Haren against Tim Lincecum. The winner will face the Newark Sugar Bears on Thursday.

Sugar Bears roll to 8th in row
With a playoff spot already locked up, the Newark Sugar Bears have their sights set on the Hanover Division. Yesterday's 6-0 blanking of D.C. was their 8th win in a row, giving them a magic number of 7 to clinch the division. James Shields held the O-Bombers to only 5 hits and 3 walks in gaining his 12th win of the year. Manny Ramirez (3) and Jack Cust (2) drove in 5 of the 6 runs for Newark.
Meanwhile, nothing much changed in the Morris Division. Carolina dropped an 8-7 decision to Vancouver and Hillsborough was shellacked by Arkansas 14-4, so the Cats remain 2 games out of first. Philly edged Blue Ridge 6-4 to remain 2 1/2 games out of a playoff spot. The Falcons' win evens their record up at 72-72, but they remain 5 games out of 6th.

Hitmen streak iced
The Hired Hitmen's streak of 7 wins was snapped yesterday in a 6-3 loss to Blue Ridge. Michael Young and Rickie Weeks each had 2 hits and Gavin Floyd pitched 8 strong innings to lead the Bombers to victory. Hillsborough remains 5 1/2 games up on Carolina for the Morris Division lead.
Amityville continues to baffle Marietta. Yesterday Dallas Braden tossed a 3-hit shutout against the Mighty Men in a 2-0 victory. Braden struck out 5 and walked one in his 2nd win of the year. Meanwhile John Danks was the hard luck loser in the game, spinning 7 innings of 2-run ball and falling to 14-6 on the season. The Ant Slayers scored both runs in the 5th inning that was marred by a wild pitch and a hit batsman. Alex Rodriguez hit a sac fly after Danks' wild pitch allowed the runner to move to third and Jason Kubel singled in the second run.
Vancouver edged Las Vegas in a 2-1 pitchers duel. Ben Sheets and A.J. Burnett both pitched 7 innings of 1-run ball, but neither factored into the decision. It was in the 8th inning when a Joe Nathan pitched got by catcher John Baker, allowing David Ortiz to score from third. The play was ruled a passed ball. Dennys Reyes struck out 2 and retired the side in order in the 9th to pick up his 1st save of the season.
Newark waved a tearful good-bye to longtime Sugar Bear John Smoltz, released after many difficulties pitching in AAA. "We would love Smoltzie to come back and pitch for us" said pitching coach Mike Grace, "but we needed to make a decision that would help us win this year." Smoltz had been with the team since the summer of 2000 since Newark acquired the righthander from Carolina in exchange for outfielder Jim Edmonds. Smoltz had been stellar in both starting and relief roles for the Sugar Bears, including a 22-5 campaign in 2005 and a 45-save effort in 2003.

Hunter, Danks, take weekly awards
By acquiring Alex Rodriguez last week, the Ant Slayers were trying to add some punch to their lineup. Little did they know it'd come from outfielder Torii Hunter. This week, Hunter batted .500 (12-24) with 3 homers and 13 RBIs. Hunter also put up an astounding 1.600 OPS to take this week's JR Cigars Smokin' Batter of the Week Award.
Hillsborough had two contenders in the race this week and neither one was Aubrey Huff: Carlos Lee (.500/.519/.917, 3 HR, 9 R, 11 RBI) and Nick Markakis (.417/.563/.625, 10 R). Other notables: Marietta' s Josh Hamilton (.500/.576/.786, 11 R, 2 3B), Hoboken's Mike Napoli (.381/.462/.905, 3 HR, 11 RBI), Arkansas' Skip Schumaker (.462/.481/.731, 8 RBI), and Newark's Mike Fontenot (.429/.538/.810).
Who says you have to strike out a ton of batters to be effective? Look at Marietta's John Danks. He only struck out 6 batters in his 14 innings of work this week, yet held his opponents to only 8 hits and an 0.64 ERA. Maybe he only got one win out of his two starts, but that's not his fault. At least he has this week's Fancy Fast Food Pitcher of the Week Award to console him.

First half, pitching review
Though he didn’t start the all-star game, it’s tough not to call Tim Lincecum of But if this year’s winner doesn’t come from 
the Carolina Mudcats, whose rotation boasts three pitchers in the top 10 in the league in ERA: Roy Halladay (3.31), Daisuke Matsuzaka (3.31) and Carlos Zambrano (3.50). Halladay ended the first half as the league’s leader in complete games (7) and innings pitched (127 2/3) while Matsuzaka had the lowest batting average against (.170). It’s no surprise that
cum for the league lead in wins (11-2), and right behind Halladay in innings pitched (125). Hoboken’s Jeremy Guthrie finished second to Dustin Pedroia in Pat Listach Award voting last year and also has followed it up with a solid sophomore, ranking 3rd in ERA (3.28). His 7-6 record could look better if not for a shaky Cutters bullpen.
It’s unclear whether the Mighty Men get their name from their fearsome batting lineup or their impressive starters, three of whom have nine wins at the break: Mike Mussina (9-4), John Danks (9-2) and Ervin Santana (9-6). Or perhaps it’s the bullpen that makes
Cliff Lee of Arkanas hit the all-star break on the DL, but a strong second half might put the lefty hurler into the mix for the McDonald. Only 7-6 at the break, Lee still had an ERA of 3.70 with 101 strikeouts.
Youngster John Lester has been a workhorse, logging 118 innings in the first half with a 3.51 ERA but just a 6-5 record to make a forimidable lefty-right, 1-2 punch in Amityville. Teammate Roy Oswalt finished the first half strong after a slow start, going 9-4 with two shutouts.
