John Lackey pitched a 4-hit shutout of the Mudcats yesterday, striking out six, and improving to 12-6 on the year. The Hitmen only managed 3 runs and 7 hits, but it was enough. Meanwhile Tampa pounded the Sugar Bears 11-5. Andy Pettitte, a former Sugar Bear, won his 12th as he limited Newark to 4 hits and 2 runs in 6 innings. James Loney and Pat Burrell combined to go 4-7 with 9 RBIs to lead the Plunker offense.
The team that lost ground was the Sardine City Straphangers. The Sardines fell victim to Vancouver's ace, Jake Peavy, who became the first in the DMBL to win 20 games. Peavy improved to 20-3 with 7 solid innings. With possibly 6 more starts to go, Peavy has an outside shot at tying Greg Maddux's 10-year old DMBL record of 26 wins.
Las Vegas finally was able to gain some ground on Newark with a 2-1 win over Hoboken. Jason Hirsh, who has been stellar since replacing Erik Bedard and Tim Lincecum in the rotation, outduelled Matt Garza to earn the W. Since returning to the rotation, Hirsh is 2-0 with a 2.25 ERA and 1.17 WHIP in 2 starts.

Hillsborough loses ground on shaky playoff spot
Philadelphia broke their recent hex and came out on top of Las Vegas yesterday with a 12-10 win. The Animals jumped out to an early 7-2 lead but the Rat Pack came back and led 10-7 by the end of the 6th. Albert Pujols tied up the game at 10 in the 8th inning with a 2-run homer, then Jorge Posada hit a 2-run homer in the following inning to give the Animals the win. The Animals desparately needed the win after dropping into double-digit games behind Morris Division-leading Vancouver.
Newark extended their winning streak to 11 games after a 5-3 defeat of the Hitmen. The Hitmen made a noble effort to come back in the later stages of the game, but fell short. Jack Cust hit his 40th homer of the season for Newark and Chien Ming Wang improved to 12-5 on the season. Hillsborough lost ground in the playoff race as both Sardine City and Tampa Bay won their respective games. The Plunkers are now only one game behind Hillsborough, while Sardine City trails by 3 games.
Arkansas and Carolina keep falling deeper and deeper into irrelevance, as far as the playoff race is concerned. The Falcons dropped their 6th straight game, a 5-3 loss to the aforementioned Straphangers. Meanwhile Carolina lost to the Cutters 5-3 making it 4 in a row for the Mudcats.
Two DL moves were made yesterday. Las Vegas once again turns to Jason Hirsh to patch up their rotation. Meanwhile, Sardine City picked up journeyman catcher Yorvit Torrealba to fill in while Miguel Olivo recuperates. Torrealba had previously played for Arkansas where he briefly replaced Olivo as well.

Rock you like a Hurri-Cain
Matt Cain came roaring back off the disabled list, shutting out the Mudcats on two hits and striking out 9 in 9 innings. Cain improved to 3-3 on the season. Cain had missed two starts and was replaced by Kason Gabbard, who was released to make room.
Vancouver's Zack Greinke improved to 7-0 on the season with a solid effort against the Bushslappers yesterday. Greinke pitched 7.2 innings, surrendering two runs on 5 hits and one walk. Vancouver's number one pick in the 2008 draft started out in the bullpen this season, but got his first shot in the rotation when Chad Billingsley was hurt early in the season. He returned fulltime to the rotation after Rich Hill's disastrous starts and never looked back. Greinke and Tampa Bay's Andy Pettitte (6-0) are the last two undefeated pitchers in the league.
Jason Hirsh pitched his final game as a Rat yesterday, a solid effort, but a no-decision. Hirsh ended up 0-2, with a 3.71 ERA in 4 starts. He was released to make room for Orlando Hernandez's return from the DL yesterday. Speaking of the Rats, reliever Brett Myers cost the team for the second straight game, blowing a 6-5 lead Tuesday and a 4-3 lead yesterday. Myers now has an 8.87 ERA in 17 appearances this season. How long can the Rats stick with the disappointing Myers?

Vancouver earns tough win against Sugar Bears
The 2008 All-Star Ballot has just been posted. The All-Star Game is about a month away, but feel free to vote early or wait a few more weeks...
Vancouver pulled off a huge win against Newark at the Cereal Bowl. The loss is only the second loss on the season at home for the Sugar Bears. The game was a ping pong match of high scoring. Newark started it off with a 3-run second inning. Vancouver got the lead back in the fifth, scoring four runs to take a 5-3 lead, highlighted by a David Ortiz two-run bomb. Nick Swisher and Jack Cust hit back to back home runs in the bottom of the inning to retake the lead, 6-5. But Vancouver scored two runs in each of the next two innings to claim a 9-6 lead, then extended it to 12-6 with a 3-run eighth. But Newark wasn't done. Nick Swisher hit his second home run of the night, a three-run shot to bring the Sugar Bears to within three. Jarrod Saltalamacchia hit yet another two-run dinger in the ninth to bring Newark to within one, but Mike Fontenot hit a towering pop up that catcher Victor Martinez hauled in for the final out.
Sardine City kept their hot streak alive with a 5-2 win over Hillsborough. Kurt Suzuki hit a key two-run single in the eighth that broke the game wide open for the Straphangers. Fausto Carmona pitched a brilliant 6.1 innings, allowing only one earned run on three hits, but did not factor into the decision. The Sardines have now won six of their last seven games.
Mike Redmond extended his hitting streak to 16 in Carolina's 10-9 loss to New Jersey. Redmond was 2-4 and is now one game shy of B.J. Upton for the season's longest streak. New Jersey's Garrett Anderson was 3-5 with three runs scored. Anderson has been filling in for the injured Alfonso Soriano and Melky Cabrera and doing an admirable job there. Anderson is hitting .326 with a .775 OPS in 11 games so far. Soriano is expected to return Sunday, though Anderson may continue to replace Cabrera in the lineup.
Kelvim Escobar tallied 13 strikeouts against his former team and outduelled Matt Garza to pick up a 2-1 win for the Bushslappers in Hoboken. Adrian Beltre doubled in the winning run in the seventh to give D.C. their third straight win.
