The king of the Mirror League, Hillsborough, continued their streak, winning their 4th straight Mirror League title. The Hitmen fell just one game short of making their first World Series appearance this year. With the Mirror League victory, the Hitmen once again have great expectations for next season. "If the Mirror League is a reflection" said owner Brent Campbell, "then that means we will have victory in the DMBL next year as well!" Coming in second is the Las Vegas Rat Pack. The Pack was eliminated in the first round of the playoffs by Hillsborough and almost gave up on the DMBL. But the Pack is back with a vengeance and looking forward to coming back even stronger in 2010.
The third place team was a bit of a surprise. The second-to-last place Sardine City Straphangers will hope to combine a favorable draft position with a solid keeper list to truly contend for the first time in their short history. Philadelphia and Vancouver, two of the usual playoff contenders, rounded out the 4th and 5th positions. Despite this, Vancouver seems to be on a rebuilding program, though Philly does seem to be a contender again in 2010. Hoboken sits in 6th place (what would be the final playoff position for a typical DMBL season) and hopes to reverse their fortunes from a forgettable 2009 season.
Sitting at the bottom are the Morris Division champion Carolina Mudcats. The Cats fell to the Mighty Men in the second round of the playoffs and look destined to rebuild next season. The other two teams near the bottom are the Amityville Ant Slayers (13th) entering their sophomore season and New Jersey Team Buddah (12th) who seems to be stuck near the bottom every year.
Just to show how much this means, according to the Mirror League last season - out of the top 6 finishers, 4 made the playoffs. Arkansas, who finished 3rd, just barely missed out, and Sardine City, finishing 6th, was the second worst team in the league. 12th place Carolina, as noted before, won their division.

DMBL Mirror League
Almost forgot to take one last look at the ol' DMBL Mirror League. Last year, Hillsborough's owner Brent Campbell let no opportunity slide to remind everyone that he won the Mirror League in '07. This year he'll have to settle for a tie atop the standings with the infamous Newark Sugar Bears. But how did it all pan out for last year's top Mirror finishers?
Well, #1 ranked Hillsborough finished 6th overall. The solid core of keepers kept the Hitmen in the race all year long. #2 in last year's standings was 2008 DMBL champion Vancouver and #3 was the runner up Sugar Bears. The other playoff teams: D.C. (#4), Las Vegas (#6), and Philadelphia (#7). The fifth place team, South Boston/Tampa Bay was in the playoff hunt all season long and even occupied a playoff spot for much of the season. The last place team in the Mirror League also became the last place team in 2008 - New Jersey Team Buddah. But enough about last year, let's see who this season's top finishers were...
Like I mentioned earlier, Newark and Hillsborough finished tied for the top spot. I guess the Sugar Bears' Reign of Terror isn't quite over just yet. Good news for Campbell though, he will still be able to brag and keep his Mirror League banner flying high over the Toilet Bowl. Finishing in third are the Arkansas Falcons - a team with a great history in the DMBL that has been sidetracked lately. Could a return to the playoffs be in the cards for the Falcons? In #4, the Vancouver Iron Fist. Clearly they will have their hands full defending their own division, let alone the DMBL title. 5th is Las Vegas, who looked like they tossed their entire future for a run at the title this year. Maybe the Rats fortunes aren't spent just yet... The 6th playoff team, according the Mirror League would be the Sardine City Straphangers. The Sardines flirted with contention in 2008, so it should be no surprise that they appear poised at a real playoff chance in 2009. With a very young roster, the Straphangers look ready to finally make a run for it.
At the bottom of the heap, things don't appear to be much better for the Buddahs, who moved from Jersey to Stamford, but also from #14 all the way up to...well...#13. Finishing at the bottom are the Hoboken Cutters.
The Mirror League projected well in 2008, but don't take this as Gospel. Projections were way off for the 2007 season where 4 of the top 6 finishers didn't even make the playoffs.

DMBL Mirror League
Yep it's here early this year. The DMBL Mirror League is now set up and extending its invitation. Every year, Butch Garretson sets up the Yahoo! league and tries to follow along with the transactions of the DMBL - all you have to do is sign up, you don't have to do anything more. It is a very convenient way to check up how your players are doing out there in the 2008 MLB season. It's a very handy tool when it comes to evaluating trades or deciding who to cut in order to make room for that guy you have to activate from the DL. Usually we get most of the league to sign up, but there are always a few stragglers that forget, so let's try to get all 14 members in there this time. All you need is a Yahoo! id, which by the way is free.

DMBL Mirror League wrap-up
There are already some rumors of potential new owners swirling around the DMBL office. There could be an announcement as soon as this week. Speaking of announcements, some of the league awards will begin to be announced this week. You may already know the winners of the Eck and the Rintel awards - look for the write-ups shortly, as well as the Gold Gloves. Make sure to get your votes in for the other awards.
This year the Hillsborough Hired Hitmen won the DMBL Mirror League. Vancouver was second, with Newark and D.C. following? Does this bode well for the fortunes of these teams in 2008? And what does this say for Team Buddah, the Sharks, and the Cutters who brought up the rear?
In 2006, Hillsborough also won the Mirror League, with Newark and Vancouver in second and third, respectively. Newark of course went on to win the 2007 DMBL World Series, but Hillsborough and Vancouver both narrowly missed the playoffs. How did Series runner up Marietta do? They finished ninth! The last place team, the Hoboken Cutters, was the fifth seeded playoff team in '07. Honolulu, the fourth seed, finished 12th! Ok, maybe that's just an aberration.
In 2005, Vancouver finished atop the Mirror League, with Hillsborough second and Newark third (same three teams, huh?). Vancouver and Newark met in the '06 World Series and the Hitmen finished just outside the playoffs again. Westwood finished in last and weren't competitive in '06, but the Arkansas Falcons finished 13th in the ML and ended up making the playoffs. Other playoff teams: Carolina (4th) and Marietta (6th) were the top seeded wild cards. The '05 ML had a better track record.

Arkansas and Newark won their respective divisions and met in the World Series and Philadelphia made the playoffs for the first time in franchise history. In fact, five of the top six ML finishers made the 2005 DMBL Playoffs. The sixth, Honolulu, finished seventh in the ML, so 2006 is looking more and more flukey by the minute.

Cutters deal Wainwright to Gang
South Boston and Hoboken finalized a deal yesterday. Hoboken sent young starter Adam Wainwright to South Boston in exchange for role player Greg Norton and reliever Brandon League. Both players were not in the Gang's future for next year. South Boston has plans to convert Wainwright into a starter next season, though he'll continue to work out of the pen this year.
Hillsborough's winning streak ends at 11 games after a 6-1 loss to Jake Westbrook and the Buddahs yesterday. Westbrook pitched eight innings and surrendered only four hits and one run. Meanwhile, Hillsborough starter Justin Verlander also broke the streak of quality starts by surrendering five runs in 5.1 innings.
Francisco Liriano improved to 12-1 with an impressive performance against Carolina yesterday. Liriano shut down the Cats for seven innings, holding them to three hits and zero runs while striking out 8. The Mighty Men won the game 4-1.
D.C. scored six runs on five homers in a 6-1 victory over Las Vegas yesterday. All five home runs were solo shots. Anibal Sanchez pitched a brilliant eight innings, holding the Rats to only three hits and one unearned run over eight innings.
Hoboken held on to win a tight 3-2 win over Vancouver. Once again the Iron Fist came up just shy of tying the game up in the ninth. Hoboken had led the game 3-0, but Vancouver scored two on a David Ortiz homer in the ninth. Former Vancouver reliever David Riske, who was recently recalled from AAA Weehawken, retired the final batters for his first save of the season.
Final reminder! This weekend is the last chance to make any trades this year or to claim any players off waivers who will be elligible as keepers next year.

Last day of Preseason games!
Today is the last day of preseason games. The regular season begins Sunday with an opening day double-header. Expect a week full of cuts and waiver wire claims. Also hopefully coming soon are the much anticipated Butch's Preseason Sims article. Maybe we'll see one from the Swami this year too, but we don't really know what that guy is up to. I'll do a spring training wrap-up this week, as well.
The Sugar Bears have already started their housecleaning and are making their cuts, little by little this week. Saturday they cut Russ Branyan and Jon Lieber, then Sunday they cut Tim Wakefield and Luke Hudson. Two castoffs have also been claimed over the weekend. Vancouver castoff Marcus Giles was signed by Las Vegas and Brandon Inge, formerly in Marietta's camp, was scooped up by Sardine City. More to come this week.
