Carolina evened their series with Hillsborough, scoring 5 runs in the 8th to win 8-5. The Cats started the inning with back to back doubles, then Xavier Nady was hit by a pitch. After some grumbling, the Hitmen opted to put Jose Arredondo in to relieve Felix Hernandez. After walking the first batter to load the bases, Arredondo struck out Mike Aviles for the first out. But Bengie Molina hit a base hit that scored two runs, giving the Cats the lead back. The Cats extended the lead by two more runs then retired the side in order to preserve the victory.
Amityville took two in a row against first-place Newark with a 9-7 win yesterday. Roy Oswalt won his 11th, pitching 7 innings and giving up 3 runs on 6 hits. It was the first time Newark lost back to back games in more than a month.
Chad Billingsley struck out 13 Falcons in 6.1 innings while holding them to 1 run on 6 hits in a 6-2 win. Ricky Nolasco was pounded for 6 runs and 8 hits in 2 innings in the loss. It was Vancouver's 3rd straight win.

Amityville's 10-run inning makes Ants of Hillsborough
Players of the week will be announced next Tuesday...
The Ant Slayers scored 10 runs in the 7th inning to rally past the Hired Hitmen 12-5 yesterday. The Slayers started the inning off with a solo Pat Burrell home run and capped it off with a three-run Clint Barmes homer. Torii Hunter and Garrett Atkins also homered in the inning. Burrell was 3-4 in the game.
Las Vegas rallied back from a 2-0 deficit in the late innings to secure a 3-2 victory over Blue Ridge. Alex Gordon's triple in the 7th led to the Rats' first run of the game. Then Chris Davis and Richie Sexson hit solo home runs to give the team the lead. Trevor Hoffman sent down the Bombers in order to record his 7th save.
The Landsman brothers battled it out to an 8-7 final in extra innings. Marietta took a 5-3 lead in the 3rd when Brandon Phillips hit a triple that scored Adrian Beltre. Phillips would score on a fielder's choice. D.C. took the lead in the 6th when Casey Kotchman hit a 3-run homer, giving the O-Bombers a 7-5 cushion. D.C. got in trouble the next inning though and Marietta tied it up on an Adrian Gonzalez RBI single. Finally, in the 10th, Marietta won the game on a walk-off single by Brian Giles.
Newark battled back from a 6-0 hole but the Falcons pulled it out. Arkansas led 6-0 in the 6th, but Newark chipped away until they tied it up in the 8th. But David Wright hit a two-run shot that gave the Falcons the lead back in the 9th. Ramon Vazquez hit a solo homer to lead off the 9th for Newark, closing the gap to 8-7, but Bobby Abreu grounded into a double play to end the game.
Jesse Litsch won for just the second time this season as he limited Vancouver to only one run on 5 hits in 7 innings. Litsch improved to 2-10 on the season. Chad Billingsley took a tough loss as he gave up only one earned run (and one unearned) in 5.2 innings. Billingsley struck out 8 while giving up 4 hits and 3 walks.
Joba Chamberlain was spectacular once again striking out 11 in 7 innings, giving up zero runs and 3 hits in a 9-1 Sardine City victory over Philadelphia. Conor Jackson hit two home runs in the game.

Ankiel makes 'em count
We mentioned that Rick Ankiel recently became the first DMBLer to appear as both a pitcher and a position player. Did you know that Ankiel's first hit in his DMBL career was a home run on Opening Day against D.C.? Well that's nothing... Ankiel is now hitting .400 on the season - 4 hits in 10 at bats and all 4 hits are home runs. That works out to a 1.600 slugging percentage! Well, it goes without saying that Ankiel has earned a little more playing time with this performance. He started the season on the bench and now has landed a role starting against right handers.
Mike Mussina's start against the Sugar Bears wasn't very memorable - 6.2 innings, 4 earned runs, 9 Ks - but it was his 363rd career start, moving him past Kevin Brown for 7th overall. His 9 strikeouts brought him to 1997, three shy of becoming only the 7th to 2000 for their career.
Hillsborough won their 5th straight, a 6-3 victory over D.C. yesterday, sending the Hitmen into first place - percentage points ahead of Vancouver. Aubrey Huff was 3-4 with 2 home runs and 3 RBIs to lead the Hitmen, while Felix Hernandez finally put together a good start (6 IP, 9 H, ER, BB, 5K).

Batting third in the game, Ianetta took the first pitch for a called strike. Ianetta protested, asking how can a pitch that bounced in the dirt be a strike, but the umpire ignored him. The next pitch came in high over Ianetta's head. Ianetta stared down the pitcher Jon Lester and made some kind of off-colored joke about the pitcher's bout with cancer. Lester then uncorked a pitch in at Ianetta's hands sending him to the ground in obvious pain. Ianetta charged the mound, punching Lester with his injured hand and then screamed in pain when he realized it was the one that the ball hit. Blue Ridge signed DMBL retread Jason Kendall to take his spot on the roster.

Deja vu for Vegas, Buddah
Don't forget that tomorrow there will be a morning doubleheader and then we're off for about a week, resuming games, hopefully, on June 1. Take advantage of the time off to vote for the All-Star Game!
New Jersey and Las Vegas experienced a weird case of deja vu yesterday as both lost two key players to injuries, just as the two have recently returned from DL trips.
Team Buddah lost outfielder Alfonso Soriano in his third game back from injury. Soriano only had 9 at bats before succumbing to another injury. Hey, at least Team Buddah won the game 9-2 as his replacement at DH, Yuniesky Betancourt, went 2-3 with 2 RBIs.
Meanwhile Las Vegas just activated shortstop Jeff Keppinger on May 18th, but he only lasted three games as well. Keppinger went 3-4 in his final game and was replaced by outfielder Ryan Church at shortstop. "I never played shortstop, man!" said a terrified Church "Whose idea was this???" Church's anguish only lasted two innings, but he was still seen shaking in the clubhouse after the game.
Sardine City's Phil Hughes outdueled Vancouver's Chad Billingsley in a 1-0 match. Hughes struck out 11 in seven innings of work, while only giving up three hits. Billingsley, who struck out 9 in 6 innings, lost his first decision of the year. Billingsley got in trouble in the sixth when he gave up a leadoff single to B.J. Upton. After striking out the next batter, Billingsley loaded the bases on two walks. Billingsley struck out the next batter, but Willy Taveras lined a base hit up the middle that scored the games only run. Billingsley then struck out his third batter of the inning, but the damage was done.
Justin Verlander was impressive in a complete game 6-3 victory over the Mudcats yesterday (7 H, 10 K, 1 ER). Nevertheless, the Hired Hitmen have announced that they will be offering many of their players up for trade, including Robinson Cano, Ryan Howrd, Brad Hawpe, C.C. Sabathia, and Verlander. "Some people say it might be a little early to write off this season" said Hitmen owner Brent Campbell, "but the we want to get a head start on next season. The early bird gets the worm."

Falcons injuries pile up
Arkansas' Curt Schilling pitched a brilliant 2-hit complete game against D.C. yesterday as the Falcons won 7-1. One of the two hits was a Carlos Beltran solo homer. Meanwhile Arkansas' injury plague continues as the Falcons lost Orlando Cabrera for at least a week. He joins Roger Clemens, Chris Coste, Bob Wickman, and Eric Hinske in the infirmary. Clemens might actually be able to still make his start Friday thanks to an off day Wednesday.
Chad Billingsley pitched another solid game, but the Vancouver pen couldn't hold the lead for him and ended up losing 5-3 to the Mudcats. Billingsley had pitched six innings and allowed only two runs but Chad Gaudin gave up two solo homers to start off the eighth inning. Joel Peralta gave up another solo shot in the ninth to Grady Sizemore to add insult to injury.
The first wave of callups has begun.
Newark recalled Matt Stairs, Dave Bush, Kevin Millwood and James Shields. Stairs may see some pinch hitting action, but the pitchers will most likely only be used in extreme situations where the rest of the pen is tired. It is possible that one of them will get a spot start to rest the regular starters for the playoffs toward the end of the month. Newark is close to clinching so they may not have much left to play for anyway.
Vancouver has recalled Jose Guillen and Manny Corpas. Corpas will see some time in the bullpen, likely at the expense of Chad Gaudin, who has been horrible. Guillen will serve as an emergency bat off the bench.

Billingsley stabilizes Fist staff
Chad Billingsley earned his first DMBL win, holding D.C. to only three hits and zero runs over 7.1 innings. Billingsley, who was going to spend the year at AA Spokane, was called up recently because the rest of the staff was falling apart at the seams. Though shaky at times, Billingsley still has only a 2.70 ERA and 1.27 WHIP in 4 starts. Picking up his 28th save was Billy Wagner, now up by two for the league lead over Francisco Rodriguez. David Ortiz hit two homers in the game.
Strange stat line from Hoboken, as the Cutters have now won two straight against the powerhouse Sugar Bears. The Cutters won 12-8, holding the Sugar Bears to only three hits. That's right, the Sugar Bears scored eight runs on only three hits! It certainly didn't help that the Cutters walked 11 Sugar Bears batters and hit two more, but still... One of the hits was a Michael Barrett grand slam in the first inning after three of the first four batters walked.
The Buddahs pulled off a ninth-inning miracle comeback over the Straphangers. The Sardines held a 7-5 lead in the ninth but the pressure was too much for Akinori Otsuka. After getting the first two batters out in the inning, Otsuka could not get the final out. The unlikeliest of heroes, Dioner Navarro, who is batting .216 on the season, hit a two-run single to tie the game, then Andy Phillips, he of the .118 average, got the game winning hit - only his second hit of the season.

D.C., Hillsborough head in opposite directions
The Sugar Bears' streak is over at twelve after a doubleheader sweep at the hands of South Boston. The Gang took the first game thanks to a 2-homer, 5-RBI outburst from Ramon Hernandez and a solid outing from Dontrelle Willis. Randy Johnson did notch his 2000th career strikeout in the match, but he did not provide much help outside of that. The second game was much closer, but the Gang scored two runs in the eighth (seems to be a popular inning for comebacks) to take the lead 4-3. Brandon League won the game in relief and improved to 8-2.
Francisco Liriano shut out Vancouver 6-0 yesterday to improve to 11-1 on the season. Liriano held Vancouver to 6 hits in 6 innings and the Marietta pen finished the game off. The win spoiled the DMBL debut of Chad Billingsley who only gave up one run over seven innings of work, while striking out six. Billingsley took the place of the struggling Ben Sheets. Sheets was sent down to AAA to work on his mechanics. Vancouver got them back, however, in the second game as Moises Alou blasted three home runs (all solo shots) to help squeak by 8-7. Vancouver actually hit six homers in the contest, though they only managed 8 runs. Gerald Laird was the only one to hit a homer with a runner on base.
D.C. has hit a wall lately, losing their eighth straight game after a marathon 17 inning loss to Honolulu yesterday. D.C. has now dropped into a fourth place tie with Honolulu and is only one game ahead of Hoboken and Hillsborough for sixth place. It's a very tight race lately - 1 1/2 games separates third place Marietta from seventh place, so it'll be very interesting to see what happens in the next few weeks.
The anti-Bushslappers have been the Hillsborough Hired Hitmen who have won eight straight and are now tied for the sixth playoff spot with Hoboken. Hillsborough shut down the Cutters yesterday with back-to-back solid performances from Justin Verlander and Felix Hernandez. He's 5-1 since that low point and has brought his ERA down to 6.34, including seven quality starts in his last eight outings and a recent Pitcher of the Week award.
Take note that the DMBL trading deadline will be this Sunday. After this point, any players that are signed off the waiver wire are not elligible to be kept after the season is over.

Rookie pitchers impress
Revenge Factor Alert: Newark's Javier Valentin went 5-5 vs his former team, the Arkansas Golden Falcons.
Marietta's Francisco Liriano pitched a complete game against Carolina, and is now an impressive 3-0 in preseason. Marietta acquired the young hurler in the offseason from Las Vegas and is counting on the rookie to be their ace.
Sardine City's Andruw Jones had a big day against South Boston yesterday. Jones was 3-3 with 2 home runs against the Gang. Jones was the second player taken by Sardine City in the dispersal draft.
Hillsborough's John Lackey had some control problems against Newark but otherwise turned in a solid effort. Lackey walked eight batters in his seven innings of work, but only surrendered one run and four hits. "Everybody is trying to gain their command in the spring" said Lackey after the game.
Rookie Tom Gorzelanny was once again impressive for New Jersey. Gorzelanny pitched seven strong innings in a bid to make the team's starting rotation. So far he is 2-1 with a 1.96 ERA in the spring. Meanwhile, in the same game, Vancouver's Chad Billingsley worked his way out of a possible rotation spot. With fellow rookie Scott Olsen struggling, Billingsley has not taken advantage of the opening. "We feel that Chad will do better in AAA" said team pitching coach Dennis Eckersley. Billingsley's next turn in the rotation will be taken by Randy Wolf.

"We may yet see Crosby back in Falcon gold" said owner Stump Matiash, "but for now we need to go in a different direction."

Rookie Tom Gorzelanny was once again impressive for New Jersey. Gorzelanny pitched seven strong innings in a bid to make the team's starting rotation. So far he is 2-1 with a 1.96 ERA in the spring. Meanwhile, in the same game, Vancouver's Chad Billingsley worked his way out of a possible rotation spot. With fellow rookie Scott Olsen struggling, Billingsley has not taken advantage of the opening. "We feel that Chad will do better in AAA" said team pitching coach Dennis Eckersley. Billingsley's next turn in the rotation will be taken by Randy Wolf.
Newark and Arkansas made some roster shakeups yesterday. Newark released outfielder Ryan Church and rookie reliever Kurt Birkins to make room for a couple of middle relievers. Arkansas once again gave up on young shortstop Bobby Crosby. Arkansas had hoped that Crosby would be their shortstop of the future two years ago, but Crosby has not progressed as they had hoped. "We may yet see Crosby back in Falcon gold" said owner Stump Matiash, "but for now we need to go in a different direction."
