Ragans walks 7, combines on 3rd no-hitter of 2025

Despite walking 7 batters, reigning Ben McDonald Award winner Cole Ragans of Poovey Farms added another highlight to his resume combining with Lucas Erceg to throw this season's 3rd no-hitter.

Ragans struck out 11 over 7 1/3 innings in a 10-1 thrashing of El Paso at home in Game 2 of Sunday's doubleheader. Erceg cleaned up the final 1 2/3 innings, striking out two. Ragans was what you might call effectively wild, with 11 Ks, he threw 123 pitches but only 67 for strikes (.544) and managed to give up 1 earned run thanks to the walks and 2 wild pitches.

It's the 11th combined no-hitter in DMBL history and 35th overall no-hitter. It's also the third no-hitter in franchise history for Poovey Farms and the first since early 2024 when Shohei Ohtani combined with Gabe Speier and Nate Pearson. Three is the most no-hitters in a DMBL season, along with the 2018, 2015, and 2014.

El Paso scored in the 4th when Ragans was his wildest, with 3 walks and a wild pitch, plating the run on a groundout. That tied the game at 1-1 after Freddie Freeman had tripled to leadoff the 2nd and scored on an Alec Bohm single. Michael Toglia homered in the bottom of the 5th to break the tie and give the Dairy Cows a 2-1 lead.

Poovey Farms blew the game open in the 6th when El Paso committed 2 of their 3 errors, highlighted by a Zach Neto two-run double to make it 6-1. They tacked on more in the 7th when Ohtani blasted his 46th home run and Toglia hit his 2nd of the contest to get the final 10-1 score.

The Chihuahuas' lone bright spot was Ronald Acuna, Jr., who walked in all four plate appearances, stole his 34th base, and scored the lone run.
